Centre for the Recovery of Wild Animals

The Centre for the Recovery of Wild Animals was set up in 1998 at the quarry of l'Alzina in Ciutadella. Its task consists in healing, whenever possible, the injured or sick wild animals that are found in Menorca, and is carried out by an enthousiastic group of volunteers.
At the moment it is divided into four departments: a large 'flight cage', in which convalescent birds train to fly again; another place to stay the animals that cannot be freed, as they couldn't live in their medium because of their wounds; a zone for foreign tortoises collected from people that don't want to keep them anymore and, finally, an area to keep temporally terrapins brought by people thet maintained them in non-suitable yards.

There is a 'network' of vounteers in all
the towns of the island that collaborate in collecting injured or endangered wild animals when someone
find one and calls the GOB. They send them to the Center, in where the veterinaries take care of them. Two courses have been organized for the volunteers, in order to show
how to treat an animal in these circumstances. This group of people is open to anyone
that wants to participate in this task. Get in touch with us if you want to participate!
The main causes of wild animals to come to the Centre are the collision with objects, breeds fallen from their nests, exhaustion or confusion and being ran over by vehicles.

The environmental education
The Centre is also used for education purposes: the slogan Animals also go to hospital is the title of an activity dedicated to children, in which they learn, through the observation and a series of games, the main species of birds, mammals and reptiles living in Menorca, their behaviour and the problems they have.
The children discover as well the danger of freeing foreign species, usually pets left by their owners, because of the impact they may produce in the native fauna. A set of toys made with recycled materials is used for these purposes.
Other different education activities are dedicated to adult people.
What to do if you find an injured animal
Catching him |
Be sure that the animal needs our help. If he is not injured or in danger it's better to leave him in his natural environment. Wild animals use to be frightened of humans, and they try to defend when we catch them. To avoid scratches or bites use a towel or a thick piece of cloth. |
| Transport | Put the animal into a cardboard box and close it in order to maintain darkness inside. Make some holes for the air to flow in and put a towel or piece of cloth in the floor. Don't leave food or water inside. And don't forget not to leave the box into the car if temperature is hot. |
| Feeding | Never feed or give water to an injured animal. In case of dehydratation this might kill him. |
| Healing | Do not try to cure the animal yourself. It must be done by a veterinary surgeon. |
Managing |
Avoid the contact of the injured animal with humans and pets. It is very stressing for him, especially in this situation.Take the animal to the GOB as soon as possible. The Police collaborates as well with this campaign. If you are not in Menorca, try to get in touch with the Police to know who can take care of it. |
