Marine Resrves are essential for the future

The sea needs protection

In addition to the existing well-known environmental problems facing the sea as a result of constant contamination from the dumping of both liquid and solid wastes, there are further direct pressures that our coasts are currently experiencing:commercial and sport fishing, illegal fishing, intensive shellfish farming, indiscriminate anchoring by small craft, the massive human presence in summer, etc.

If we want to preserve the sea in optimum condition,we must regulate use and grant special protection to certain zones in order that the marine ecosystems can recover from the damage they are suffering.

The marine resources of Menorca

Our island offers very complete communities of marine fauna and flora, with a large proportion of native Mediterranean and endangered species. The combination of rocky sea-beds -which are very well preserved compared to other similar sites in the Mediterranean- and sandy/soft sea-beds -where large colonies of marine phanerogams are to be found- together with the crystalline water and the presence of various islets bordering the main island, make Menorca a place where the marine resources deserve special protection.

At least 3 marine reserves

We at G.O.B are promoting the protection of marine areas in order to create more systems to guarantee the conservation of the environmental resources contained in the sea. We believe that a minium of 3 large protected zones representative of the marine ecosystems close to Menorca – are needed.

Additionally, some areas such as the islets and “calas” (rocky inlets) deserve protection given the special environmental wealth they represent.

Marine reserves constitute a stake in the future from which many benefits can arise: The fauna and flora are preserved, fish stocks can recover and
colonise other zones, underwater tourism is stimulated, they can be used for educational purposes, etc.

The granting of Biosphere Reserve status to Menorca should not neglect the sea which surrounds it.

Support the marine reserves!

Some useful tips

  • The huge quantity of waste products which are disposed of in the sea are causing severe problems to marine life. Never throw anything in the sea.
  • Whenever possible, help to remove waste from the sea... the marine fauna and flora will thank you for it.
  • If you have a boat and moor near the coasr, avoid setting your anchor in beds of phanerogams (seed-bearing plants). All anchors damage the sea-bed.
  • If you dive, avoid disturbing sea creatures unnecessarily. If we respect the environment, it will be better preserved and we will be able to enjoy it on future occasions.
  • Refuse to eat at restaurants that offer fish caught by harpoon or that serve undersized fish. You will help enforce the law and contribute to maintaining marine biodiversity.
  • Support bodies working to conserve marine resources. We can all play a part in preserving the sea and its treasures of nature.
